SAINT PAUL, Minnesota (February 3, 2023)—The Minnesota House of Representatives and Senate successfully passed the 100% Clean Energy Bill, a piece of legislation that would enact a state-wide standard for 100-percent carbon-free electricity by 2040.
Below is a statement by James Gignac, Midwest Senior Policy Manager at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS):
“The 100% Clean Energy Bill is an important piece of legislation that will help guarantee a sustainable and just future for Minnesota. This new path toward 100-percent carbon-free electricity is critical to healthier air quality and ensuring a transition to clean energy that serves all communities. The benefits from this bill will be far reaching—from reducing pollution to new jobs and more affordable energy. Minnesota is now among a growing set of leading states who have adopted targets to reach 100-percent carbon-free or net-zero electricity in the coming years.
With a commitment from the state legislature to phase out energy sources with heat-trapping emissions, Minnesota is also sending a strong signal to key players such as grid operators to play their part in the clean energy transition and continue much-needed transmission updates. The Union of Concerned Scientists looks forward to partnering with stakeholders and communities across Minnesota to see through the efficient and equitable implementation of this significant bill.”
