There’s an energy revolution in the Midwest—and UCS expertise is critical to the fight.

There’s an energy revolution in the Midwest—and UCS expertise is critical to the fight.

The Midwest sits at an important crossroads—one that will determine not only its own future, but the future of the United States.

For years, the region relied on coal-fired power plants, tolerating the toxic air and water pollution in exchange for cheap electricity.

But the economics have changed. Renewable energy technologies are now competing with fossil fuels, and the Midwest is home to some of the best renewable energy resources in the world. As a result, renewable energy has become the region’s largest source of new energy.

From our regional office in Chicago, the Union of Concerned Scientists has long fought for progressive clean energy policy in the Midwest. We’ve worked with partners from St. Paul to St. Louis, fended off attacks from coal and gas lobbyists, and helped pass, implement, and protect dozens of state-level policies in support of clean and equitable power.
